Martial Arts and the American Spirit

Every year on the Fourth of July, Americans celebrate independence, freedom, and the ideals that have shaped our country for nearly 250 years. While fireworks, cookouts, and parades are familiar traditions, the holiday is also an opportunity to reflect on another uniquely American tradition. Bringing people and cultures together.

Martial arts are a perfect example of that spirit.

The disciplines we practice at Be Like Water, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Boxing, and Muay Thai, each began in different parts of the world. Today, they thrive together under one roof, where students from every background train side by side in pursuit of the same goals. Self improvement, confidence, discipline, and respect.

A Nation Built on Shared Knowledge

America has long been a place where ideas from around the world come together. Martial arts are no exception.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Japanese immigrants introduced Judo to the United States. As communities grew, so did opportunities to learn the art. Judo emphasized balance, leverage, and technique over size and strength, offering a new way of thinking about self defense and competition.

Boxing, meanwhile, was already deeply rooted in American culture. From neighborhood gyms to championship arenas, it became one of the country's most celebrated sports. Boxing helped shape generations of athletes by teaching footwork, timing, conditioning, and mental toughness. Those qualities remain valuable in every combat sport today.

Decades later, Muay Thai made its way from Thailand to the United States. Known as the Art of Eight Limbs, it introduced powerful strikes using punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. As international competition grew, American athletes embraced the effectiveness and discipline of Muay Thai, making it a cornerstone of modern striking.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu arrived in America in greater numbers during the late twentieth century. As practitioners demonstrated how technique could overcome strength, the art gained widespread attention. The rise of mixed martial arts introduced millions of people to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and inspired an entirely new generation to step onto the mats.

The Birth of Modern MMA

What makes America unique is not that we invented every martial art. It is that we created an environment where they could all be practiced together.

Mixed Martial Arts became the natural evolution of this idea. Rather than limiting themselves to a single discipline, athletes began studying wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to become more complete martial artists.

That philosophy is alive every day at Be Like Water. A student may practice takedowns in Judo, sharpen striking in Boxing and Muay Thai, and develop grappling skills in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, all within the same week. Each art complements the others and helps build a well rounded martial artist.

More Than Fighting

Martial arts teach far more than effective self defense.

Students learn perseverance through difficult training sessions.

They develop confidence by overcoming challenges they once believed were impossible.

They discover humility by recognizing there is always more to learn.

Most importantly, they become part of a community that supports one another regardless of age, profession, or experience.

Those lessons extend far beyond the gym. They help build stronger families, stronger communities, and stronger individuals.

Freedom to Grow

One of the freedoms we often take for granted is the freedom to pursue personal growth.

Every time someone walks into Be Like Water for the first time, they make a choice to improve themselves. Some come to get in shape. Others want to learn self defense, compete, relieve stress, or simply try something new. Whatever the reason, martial arts offer an opportunity to become a better version of yourself.

That opportunity exists because generations of instructors and students from around the world chose to share their knowledge across cultures and borders. America embraced those traditions, allowing them to flourish and evolve together.

Happy Fourth of July

As we celebrate Independence Day, we are reminded that some of our greatest strengths come from learning from one another.

At Be Like Water, we are proud to continue that tradition by teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Boxing, and Muay Thai to students of all ages and experience levels. Every class honors the history of these incredible arts while helping students build confidence, discipline, and lifelong friendships.

Whether you are an experienced martial artist or someone considering your very first class, there has never been a better time to begin your journey.

From everyone at Be Like Water, we wish you and your family a safe, happy, and memorable Fourth of July. We hope to see you on the mats soon.
